If you have pain, swelling, a lump, abnormal bleeding or another symptom that’s worrying you or won’t go away, getting clarity over what’s causing your symptoms is important. The sooner you have answers, the sooner you can act. An MRI scan can help doctors diagnose and formulate treatment plans, but NHS waiting lists can be a barrier to getting this clarity early.

Private MRI scans, such as those available at the Sidcup MRI Unit, are an option and provide patients with the answers they need to make informed decisions about their next steps.

The Sidcup MRI Unit gives patients access to MRI scans when they need them, with family and work-friendly opening hours and a simple, clear booking process. Unit Manager Elisa started as a radiographer and has been managing the unit since 2024. She’s proud to serve the patients who visit the centre and ensures all patients receive the experience they deserve and the answers they need in a calm, supportive environment.

We spoke to Elisa about the unit and what patients from Sidcup and the surrounding areas can expect when they book an MRI.

Flexible Access to Private MRI Scans

Juggling symptoms with a busy life doesn’t need to be as stressful as it sounds. Elisa explained their focus on flexibility and exceptional patient care.

What technology, facilities or specialist capabilities are you most proud of — and why do they matter for patients?

“At the Sidcup MRI Unit, we operate two MRI scanners and are open seven days a week from 8 am to 8 pm, offering exceptional availability and flexibility and reduced waiting times. This allows us to provide appointments that fit around work, family and urgent clinical needs.”

Advanced Technology and Imaging Quality

It isn’t just availability that provides patient satisfaction; the advanced MRI scanning technology also plays a vital role.

What makes your imaging centre unique for patients?

“We use AIR Recon DL MRI technology from GE HealthCare, an enhanced AI-based MRI reconstruction technology which enables faster scanning while maintaining outstanding image quality.”

“Patients spend less time in the MRI scanning machine, which is better for anxious patients and those with claustrophobia, and they experience greater comfort. The resulting high-resolution scan images then support a more accurate diagnosis.”

A Patient-Centred Approach

Elisa’s team are friendly and knowledgeable with a strong sense of caring and a focus on the patient.

What do you want patients to know before visiting your centre for the first time?

“We want patients to know they will be treated as individuals, not just appointment slots. Our team understands that undergoing an MRI scan can feel daunting. That’s why we combine advanced technology with a calm, supportive environment and clear communication at every stage.”

“What truly sets us apart, however, is our proactive approach. We actively manage appointments, communicate clearly at every stage and prioritise patient reassurance from booking through to results.”

Exceptional Dedication to Care

Alliance Medical pride themselves on patient care, and the team in Sidcup recently demonstrated their commitment to going beyond the call of duty.

Patients can be understandably anxious when they’re with you for a scan. How do you go above and beyond to help patients if something doesn’t go to plan?

“We always go the extra mile to make patients feel comfortable. On one occasion, a patient’s transport home was significantly delayed following their scan. Our team ensured the patient remained informed while contacting the transport provider for updates.”

“When it became clear that the transport would still be some time away, we took the patient to our staff snack box area so they could have something to eat and drink while waiting. It was a small gesture, but it was much appreciated, helped make the wait easier and ensured the patient felt supported. While a patient is with us, they’re in our care, even after their scan appointment.”

Support from Beginning to End

The Sidcup MRI Unit understand that having an MRI scan isn’t just about the scan itself, and it’s clear that thought goes into the whole process.

How do you ensure a great experience from booking through to results?

“We focus on clarity, organisation and reassurance. From the initial enquiry, patients receive clear information about preparation and what to expect. Appointment times are carefully managed to minimise delays, and reminder calls 1–2 days before the scan ensure patients feel prepared and supported.”

“During the visit, our radiographers explain each stage of the process and ensure patients remain informed throughout. We also prioritise timely reporting so that patients and referring clinicians receive results without unnecessary delay.”
